What does an SIA licence mean?

Do security guards need a licence in the UK?

Yes, in most contracted roles. Anyone supplied under contract to guard premises, property or people against theft, damage or unauthorised access needs an SIA Security Guarding licence (or a Door Supervisor licence, which also covers guarding). Working without a required licence, or supplying unlicensed staff, is a criminal offence.

Is keyholding a licensable activity?

Yes. Contracted security work that involves keeping, or controlling access to, keys or devices for operating locks needs an SIA licence. There is a dedicated Key Holding licence. SIA guidance also states that a non-front line licence allows key holding, and that all front line licences (such as Security Guarding) cover the activities of a non-front line licence. See gov.uk: find out if you need an SIA licence and our keyholding service.

What is keyholding and alarm response?

Keyholding means a security company securely holds your keys and attends on your behalf when an alarm activates or access is needed out of hours. How does construction site security work?

Construction site security usually combines measures: access control at the site gate during working hours, out-of-hours guarding or mobile patrols, and remote-monitored CCTV towers or alarmed scaffold cameras.
