Much of Southampton’s commercial activity depends on the port. Vehicles for export and import are stored in compounds, containers move to warehouses along the M27 and M3, and cruise passengers arrive in large numbers on embarkation days, many leaving cars in off-port parking for a week or more. These activities create concentrated, high-value stock and sudden surges of people.

The Southampton commercial landscape
Associated British Ports describes the Port of Southampton as the UK’s number one hub for deep-sea trade, handling around £40 billion of exports a year. ABP calls it the UK’s number one vehicle-handling port, with more than 100 hectares of vehicle storage and distribution compounds holding more than 50,000 vehicles at a time. It is also home to the UK’s second-largest container terminal, run by DP World. The port has five cruise terminals, including the Horizon Cruise Terminal, which ABP says has the UK’s first shore power facility for cruise ships.
The Solent Freeport tax sites, mapped by government, include several Southampton Water sites (Redbridge, Marchwood Port and the Strategic Land Reserve, the Fawley complex and Fawley Waterside), plus Navigator Quarter in Eastleigh and Dunsbury Park in Havant. Dunsbury Park and the Southampton Water sites were designated in March 2022, and Navigator Quarter in October 2022, opening up land around the water for new development.
Local security requirements
Southampton specifications often cover:
- Key control for stored vehicles. Where a site holds customer keys, as cruise car parks often do, the key safe, issue log and handover checks matter as much as the perimeter. Assignment instructions should set out exactly who may release a vehicle and on what proof.
- Peak-day staffing. Embarkation days bring sharp peaks. Guarding can be scaled for those dates and then reduced, with the calendar agreed in advance.
- Boundaries with the port. Premises next to the dock estate should confirm with the port operator and the client’s own insurer where responsibilities sit.
- Exposed waterside plots. Unserviced land on Southampton Water often has no power. Off-grid CCTV towers and lighting towers can provide cover from the first day of enabling works.
How we mobilise and manage contracts here
Seccuro has no office in Southampton or Hampshire. Officers are assigned to each Southampton contract and inducted on site before the first shift, including briefings on key control and customer handling where relevant. We start with a survey and written assignment instructions, and agree supervision and reporting with you. Mobile patrol and alarm response arrangements across the Solent area are set per site, with no standard response time promised.
Questions
Can you secure an off-port cruise car park in Southampton?
Yes. Seccuro’s guarding and patrol services can be set up for car parks that hold vehicles while passengers sail. A typical plan includes perimeter patrols, CCTV coverage, a strict key-control procedure and extra officers on embarkation days. Every shift produces a written log.
Do your officers work inside the Port of Southampton?
No. Security inside the port’s restricted areas is managed under the port operator’s own arrangements. We protect clients’ own premises around the port, such as vehicle compounds, warehouses, car parks and development land, and coordinate with port procedures where your site borders the dock estate.
What security is needed on a Solent Freeport development plot?
Early on, usually CCTV towers and lighting towers to protect plant and materials on unserviced land, with mobile patrols. As construction moves forward, gate control during deliveries and scaffold alarm cameras may be added. We agree the scope with your principal contractor and review it at each phase.
Do you cover Eastleigh, Totton and the Waterside as well as Southampton?
Yes. Seccuro provides services across Southampton and the surrounding Solent area as part of its UK-wide coverage.
