Edinburgh combines a dense, visitor-heavy historic centre with an out-of-town office market to the west and a working port and growing residential district to the north. Security buyers here have to balance visible, courteous presence in customer-facing spaces with discreet protection of heritage buildings, and with practical site security on the waterfront.

This page notes the Scottish points that matter for Edinburgh contracts.

The Edinburgh commercial landscape

The St James Quarter at the top of Leith Walk, a £1 billion development of shops, hospitality and homes on the site of the former St James Centre, opened its first phase on 24 June 2021. The Old and New Towns around it form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which shapes how security equipment can be fitted to historic buildings. West of the centre, Edinburgh Park is an office business park beside the City Bypass, near Edinburgh Airport, served by tram stops and Edinburgh Park rail station.

To the north, the tram extension to Newhaven added 4.69 km of route and eight stops along Leith Walk and around Ocean Terminal, with passenger service from June 2023. At the Port of Leith, Forth Ports has built a new outer berth for offshore wind, and Leith is part of the Forth Green Freeport, which received final UK Government approval of its full business case in 2025.

Local security requirements

Edinburgh-specific points:

  • Heritage constraints. In the World Heritage Site and conservation areas, fixed cameras and lighting may need consent.
  • Festival-season peaks. August brings a sharp rise in footfall and temporary venues. Guarding can be scaled for those weeks. Where licensed premises under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 need door supervisors, those SIA licences are assessed separately.
  • Scottish licensing and checks. For SIA licence applicants living in Scotland, criminal record checks are normally made through Disclosure Scotland.
  • Port boundaries. Sites next to the Port of Leith should confirm with the port operator where their security responsibilities end.

How we mobilise and manage contracts here

Seccuro has no Edinburgh office and no team based in Scotland. Officers are inducted on site, including any heritage, store-policy or Scotland-specific briefings. Mobilisation begins with a survey and written assignment instructions. Supervision, reporting and response arrangements are agreed for each site, and we never assume a standard response time.

Services in Edinburgh
Can you provide retail security officers in Edinburgh city centre?

Yes. Our officers can be deployed to stores and mixed-use retail and hospitality schemes. We agree your intervention policy first, as many retailers prefer observe-and-report. Every incident is logged with times, descriptions and CCTV references for loss-prevention and police use.

How do you protect a listed building without fixing equipment to it?

We use temporary measures such as off-grid CCTV towers, wireless scaffold alarm cameras and off-grid security pods, which need no fixings into historic fabric, combined with patrols. Where fixed systems are planned, check with the planning authority first.

Do your officers need different licences to work in Scotland?

No separate licence is needed. The same SIA front-line licences apply in Scotland as in England and Wales. Officers must hold the right licence for the activity, such as security guarding or door supervision, and display it while on duty.

Do you cover Leith, Newhaven and west Edinburgh?

Yes. Seccuro provides services across Edinburgh and the Lothians, including Leith, Newhaven, Edinburgh Park and the area around the airport, as part of its UK-wide coverage.
