Tyneside’s commercial property splits into three distinct types. There is a research-and-office campus on the western side of the city centre. There is a historic core where older streets are being redeveloped around heritage buildings. And across the river in Gateshead, there is one of the country’s oldest planned trading estates, alongside a major retail centre. Each needs a different security approach, and a Newcastle contract often covers more than one.

The Newcastle upon Tyne commercial landscape
Newcastle Helix is a 24-acre city-centre site, formerly used for brewing and coal mining, developed by Newcastle University with Newcastle City Council and Legal & General. It has 20 building plots plus residential plots, and buildings such as the Urban Sciences Building, The Catalyst and Newcastle Business School. Behind Central Station, the Stephenson Quarter combines offices, hotels and the Boiler Shop events venue. To the east, the council’s East Pilgrim Street development frameworks allocate land for retail-led development in the north and offices, homes and leisure further south.
In Gateshead, the council’s regeneration plan describes Team Valley, the first purpose-built trading estate (developed in the 1930s beside what is now the A1), and the Metrocentre as two of the region’s economic powerhouses. The plan also sets out a new conference centre and arena at Gateshead Quays and up to 3,500 new homes on riverside brownfield land.
Local security requirements
Requirements we commonly scope on Tyneside:
- Façade-retention construction. Retained historic frontages mean scaffolds stay up for long periods along busy streets. Wireless scaffold alarm cameras (twin PIR sensors with a 15 m range, an infrared camera for each alert and a lithium battery lasting 3 years or more) suit sites with no power to scaffold level.
- Large, older estates. Team Valley’s long estate roads and mix of occupiers suit patrol-based cover shared across units. Each occupier still needs its own key control and alarm escalation list.
- Venue-led footfall. As new conference and arena space opens at Gateshead Quays, nearby premises may see changing late-evening footfall. Venue operators should also follow the latest guidance under the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025.
- Campus events. Innovation buildings host public events. Officers need clear guest lists, accreditation rules and evacuation roles.
How we mobilise and manage contracts here
Seccuro has no office on Tyneside. Officers receive a site induction before the first shift. Mobilisation follows a site survey and written assignment instructions, with supervisory visits and reporting agreed in advance. Patrol and alarm response arrangements for the North East are agreed site by site. We do not quote standard attendance times, and any agreed times are written into the contract.
Questions
Do you provide security on Team Valley in Gateshead?
Yes. Seccuro provides mobile patrols, keyholding, alarm response and static guarding to occupiers on Team Valley and across Gateshead, as part of its UK-wide coverage. Arrangements are set per unit.
How do you secure a façade-retention site in central Newcastle?
Usually with a combination of hoarding and gate checks, out-of-hours patrols and wireless scaffold alarm cameras covering the retained frontage. Monitoring arrangements are agreed in advance. Because these sites face busy streets, we also check that hoarding lighting and signage stay intact.
Can you staff reception for a multi-occupier innovation building?
Yes. Our reception security service covers visitor registration, pass issue, event guest lists, contractor permits and out-of-hours access. Assignment instructions are agreed with the building manager so every tenant’s visitors are handled the same way.
